Seeing something disturbing on the internet is pretty much a daily occurrence. You may see anything shocking from free for all fights to someone actively supporting Donald Trump (Story for another day). The point is, the internet holds the key to any and everything that can make your jaw drop. Lucky for me, I got to witness something that both pissed me off and made me sad at the same time. The Joy!
While scrolling through Facebook, also a daily occurrence, I came across a shared video. Sometimes I’ll bypass the video to see how many people have shared and commented to determine whether its worth watching and I can guarantee that the below video was worth it. Mainly for awareness purposes. Watch and cringe!
Obviously there’s a few things that are disturbing about this video. The daughter’s behavior is disgusting and the mother’s reaction is heartbreaking. The most disturbing thing I find about this is how the daughter is completely ashamed of her heritage and her mother. She did not want to associate with being black or that her mother worked her a** off to make sure that she could take care of her. How ungrateful and selfish! Where’s the appreciation?
She clung so closely to the fact that she grew up around white children and their parents wealth that she started to believe that she was entitled to the same. Her mother was beneath her at this point. It’s frightening to know that people in the world actually think this way. There’s always going to be a dominant race if this is the mentality. You can’t possibly do better if you’re black right? How can anyone even say that? Many races have made strides in this country and being lighter or whiter is not the answer. It’s called growth and prosperity.
The reality is, there’s nothing wrong with wanting a better life than your parents had. Most good parents want their children to grow up and have a better education, financial stability, family dynamic, and career than they were able to have. The parent shows the child hard work and expects the child to follow with effort but not exactly similar paths. What happened here? How did the daughter miss the memo? She moved away from her mother and denounced her race and relation and the best she could come up with was being a burlesque dancer? How proud everyone should be right? She’s making us all look great.
There’s a deeper issue than any of us may know. Why didn’t she know that her black is beautiful? Why didn’t she understand that her mother was doing what she thought was best? Why didn’t she understand that she should be grateful that she was taken care of? Why didn’t she know that being black is not a curse but a privilege and a blessing? Why didn’t she know that black women are among the elite as entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, educators and innovators? Why isn’t she proud of the strong mother she has? Why? There is absolutely nothing wrong with where or whom she came from. She apparently begs to differ!
