The thing about social media is that things get played over and over and over so if you didn’t see the original, its quite possible that you’ll get the instant replay a few times on your timeline. Yesterday, we all noticed that Melania Trump seemingly “borrowed” pieces of Michelle Obama’s Democratic National Convention speech during her own assigned speech for the Republican National Convention. I’ll loosely use the term borrowed meanwhile everyone else is calling her a straight up thief. Sorry girl! We have to call a spade a spade.
The thing about the speech is that there is a clear portion where the words are verbatim. Word for word, Melania went on the say the EXACT same thing that Michelle Obama spoke of, with pride and confidence. According to CNN and the LA Times, campaign reps and Melania completely deny that she plagiarized any part of her speech and that she wrote the whole thing with little help. Listen Melania, no one is saying that someone else wrote it for you. We’re basically saying that you watched a few YouTube videos and wrote a few things down and called it your own. That’s all. You took something that wasn’t yours and tried to stake your claim in the origin . If it wasn’t verbatim, you might have had a chance.
I would rather the issue be woman to woman. Something that is clear, cut and dry so it’s person to person but the problem is deeper. Not only is this a political issue of Republican vs Democrat but its also of ownership. I am not one for race talk (I really hate it) but you have to call it what it is at times. For many years, white people have been taking credit for the labor and products of things created by blacks. This is something that continues to perpetuate an America that NONE of us want to live in. Race does not need to drive everything but the proof is in the pudding. How dare she actually say that nothing she said was a duplicate of First Lady Obama’s speech.
If we keep making race a part of our lives, then history will continue to repeat itself. Take responsibility for the fact that something is not yours and you duplicated it because you thought it was great. There is absolutely nothing wrong with giving credit where its due but there’s everything wrong with trying to say something is yours and it isn’t. If this was a university, Mrs. Trump would be on academic probation but this is politics and race relations. She won’t even get a slap on the wrist and he husband will still have people going to bat for him like its the World Series and everything is riding on the last inning.
Dear Lord, Please Let Hilary Win!
